Additional
Information
Proceeds
from the event will benefit MPRA projects, including the Schools of Shad
project. Volunteers from the organization have been working with local schools
to help students learn about the environmental and historical importance of the
Mattaponi and Pamunkey rivers. At Hamilton-Holmes Middle School, students have
made their own shad sculptures, learned about shad, participated in restoration
projects by raising shad frye in tanks and underwater grasses that were later
relocated to the river, participated in a watershed planning activity and a
pollution demonstration model. Last year, KW High School biology students also
raised shad frye, underwater grasses and monitored the water quality in a local
stream.
Currently,
the organization is working with art teachers to have students create
illustrations for interpretive signs for the Algonquin Trace Water Trail kiosks.
Middle school students in the River Rats Club at HHMS are making table
decorations for the Gala. Adult and family programs are also scheduled, such as
the Cumberland Marsh hike that was held Feb. 20. MPRA also plans to offer
monthly canoe trips and a kid’s fishing day this summer as part of the
program.
