Cavity
Nesting Species
MPRA is placing a large emphasis on cavity
nesting birds that live along the Mattaponi and Pamunkey Rivers. Both
Prothonotary Warblers (breed) and Wood Ducks (breed/resident) use the
wetlands and marshes in our area. These cavity nesting birds
make it easy to gather information on arrival dates, nesting dates,
reproductive success and other data that allows us to gain information about
these two species that frequent our area.
Besides gathering data on these species:
-
We can get school groups and local residents to
participate in a hands-on project.
-
Participants can construct nestboxes, help
monitor and maintain these boxes each year.
-
Allows groups to get out on the water and
observe these species in their natural environment.
News and
Updates
Wood Ducks

We
currently have 8 GPS-located nestboxes at
Sandy Point State Forest.
Around 31 new boxes
are
needed in 4 different phases.

Prothonotary Warblers
Currently we have over
70 boxes located in a
number of locations on the Mattaponi and Pamunkey Rivers. Our goal is
to place 100 boxes. We need more boxes to
collect data on: arrival dates, egg dates, survival rates, habitat surveys,
predation, etc. Our goal is to work closely with local banding efforts
in the near future.

Warbler project,
