River Stewardship Day 2007

River Stewardship Day Moves to June 2

RSD 07 logo The 17th Annual Mattaponi and Pamunkey River Stewardship Day has been moved from its traditional September date to June 2 for 2007.  Organizers hope the change in dates will enable more school groups to become involved.  In addition, the new date moves the event out of hurricane season and it enables our River Stewardship Day to become part of Clean the Bay Day, which is sponsored annually by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

River Stewardship Day is always a great day on our local rivers.  Not only does it help clean up our local waterways, but it gives people who may not have access to the rivers an opportunity to get on the water, see wildlife, and learn about the remarkable river resources we strive to protect.  Hopefully this will lead to better stewardship of our rivers throughout the year.

Volunteers in boats, canoes and on foot are needed for the river clean up.  We work from numerous landings on both rivers from above Rt. 360 to West Point.  If you have a boat or canoe, bring it.  If you want to ride with someone, let us know.  We are especially looking for folks with boats this year so we can travel farther from our landings and reach areas that may not have been cleaned in recent years.

In addition to the clean up, volunteers can sign up for other stewardship activities, including a wetlands inventory, water quality monitoring and maintenance at our water trail kiosk sites.Clean The Bay 07 logo

Volunteers will meet for the morning briefing at 8:30 a.m. at one of three places:  Dick Campbell’s place near King William Courthouse, the West Point boat landing or Rainbow Acres Campground in King and Queen.  (click for directions)  After the morning’s clean up and stewardship activities on the rivers, all volunteers are invited to a picnic at Dick Campbell’s place on the Mattaponi at 2 p.m., featuring fried chicken, barbecue, ice cream and lots of door prizes donated by our local sponsors.

Lots of fun will be had by all, so mark the date, bring your family and friends and join in on June 2.

VERY IMPORTANT: Anyone interested in volunteering or becoming a sponsor for River Stewardship Day should call Kitty Cox, King William/West Point Litter Prevention Coordinator, at 769-4917.
