River Sojourn – Saturday, September 8, 2007
Walkerton to Sandy Point – 12 Noon Walkerton
The
overnight paddling trip will begin at the Walkerton Bridge on the Mattaponi
River and journey downstream to Sandy Point State Forest. In the evening, we’ll
share dinner, enjoy some entertainment and camp overnight. A hearty breakfast
will be provided Sunday morning, followed by a devotional service.
There
will be a workday simultaneously at Sandy Point State Forest, the location of
our newest water trail kiosk. The workday will followed by dinner, fishing,
swimming and optional camping (see below).
Cost:
$15 per person covers dinner on the 8th and breakfast on the 9th (and helps defray the cost
of shuttle service and porta potty ). $10 for dinner only, $5 for dinner for
children under 12.
If
you’d like to socialize with the group for dinner only, you’re welcome (fees
above.)
Registration:
Registration, waiver
(coming soon), and health
forms must be signed by all participants and a
Virginia Department of Forestry
volunteer form signed by workday volunteers. WORD document files
of the forms are available on the website. (If you cannot open these documents,
please let us know.) Send your registration by Sept. 4 to Dawn

Canoe rentals:
Contact Garrie Rouse at Mattaponi Canoe and
Kayak at 769-1449.
Logistics details:
Sandy
Point Gate (click for directions) will be open
from 10:15 to 11:00 to drop off camping gear and leave cars. Shuttle and
boat trailer will leave Sandy Point at 11:30 for Walkerton. Paddle begins
at Walkerton bridge at noon.
It is important to be on time, as the gate at Sandy Point will only
be open to admit sojourners at appointed times and to catch the outgoing tide at
Walkerton.
Participants should eat before the trip begins or bring their lunch. Bring water
and snacks for the trip. Water, dinner and breakfast will be provided at Sandy

Sandy
Point Workday - Sept. 8, 9:30 AM
MPRA
has recently entered an agreement with the Dept. of Forestry to help maintain
the recreational facilities onsite as part of the York River (Algonquin Trace)
water trail. On the same day as the sojourn, volunteers will help repair the
dock, picnic shelter, fire pit and kiosk at Sandy Point beach. Meet at the Sandy
Point gate at 9:30 AM. (Click for directions.)
The gate will be open for paddlers until 11:30 AM. A dinner will be held that
evening. See below for information.

Sandy Point Dinner -
Sept. 8, 6:30 PM
Dinner will be at 6:30 PM. Gate will be open from 5:30-6:15. $10
for dinner, $5 for dinner for children under 12.
Those wishing to camp overnight are welcome. Just add $5.
