What is MPRA?
The Mattaponi
& Pamunkey Rivers Association (MPRA) is a broad-based organization dedicated
to the protection of the two rivers region's natural resources.
Incorporated in January, 1992, MPRA was formed by
a diverse group of riverfront property owners, long-time residents, and citizens
new to the area.
What is the mission of MPRA?
The Mattaponi & Pamunkey Rivers Association is dedicated to the history,
ecology, scenic landscape, recreation, and economy of the Mattaponi and Pamunkey
rivers. Our goals are as follows:
-
To stimulate citizen interest and involvement in resource management
issues.
-
To increase awareness of local and regional conservation issues through
education.
-
To protect the ecology of the rivers, natural areas, agricultural and forest
land, and other area resources.
-
To preserve the historic and scenic qualities of the rivers and surrounding
landscapes.
-
To promote responsible recreational use of the rivers.
-
To encourage development compatible with traditional land use patterns and
a high quality of life.
-
To promote a constructive dialogue between governmental bodies, industry,
and citizens.

MPRA leaders plan, organize, and manage the many MPRA projects and activities. The Board of Directors meets on a quarterly basis, and often
meet on an ad-hoc basis to work on a special project or a special need or
circumstance. Board members
task themselves to oversee the committees that serve MPRA, and divide
themselves into smaller workgroups to follow projects "through to the end".
MPRA Board members also perform all administrative tasks required for its
many activities and also those required of a non-profit organization.
MPRA Financial Support & Organizational Structure
MPRA is a 501-3-C non-profit organization registered in the Commonwealth of
Virginia. Financial support comes via membership annual dues, contributions
(individual, small business corporate, government), small project grants,
and activity fees.
Future Considerations
MPRA leaders are proud and pleased with the accomplishments of the
organization since start-up, but see the need for long-term stability for
MPRA in order to be an effective "player" in local and regional affairs. Long-term motivation and coordination of MPRA's
dedicated volunteers is viewed by all as essential to continued organizational
success.

you may join and know that your membership dues go directly toward protection
